The finals are approaching, and it’s the perfect time to get organized and prepare for the rest of the semester. Although the thought of the finale may seem overwhelming, you can set yourself up for success with the right strategies. Here are some tips to help you finish the semester strong.
Look at your programs and note important dates for deadlines or exams for the rest of the semester. This will help you get comfortable with your workload leading up to the final. Use a calendar or planner to track these dates and block off study times for each course.
Prioritize your projects, assignments, labs and exams based on deadlines. Make projects and studies more manageable by breaking them down into smaller steps. Write down each individual task in your planner by the dates you will do them.
Plan a strategy
As you get organized, think about what successful study looks like to you:
Do you concentrate better when there is complete silence or background noise?
Are you mentally sharper at a certain time of the day (early morning or evening)?
Are you more of a visual learner or do you learn best by reading/writing?
Is it helpful to study with a friend or two, or do you study better alone?
Try different study methods like creating flashcards or your own one-page study guide from your class notes and materials. Knowing how you study best and finding the right study location can help you feel ready for finals.

Avoid cutting corners
Even if you prepare your study routine well before the final, remember to avoid cutting corners with your work. Failing to properly cite a source or asking a friend to help you with your work may not seem like a big deal right now, but these actions and any form of academic misconduct are honor code violations and can have consequences.

It can be tempting to sleep all night to get things done, but it can be more harmful than helpful because sleep is so vital for memory. Take short breaks during study sessions (5 minute breaks for every 25 minutes of study) to rest your brain. You can take a brisk walk, stretch, or watch a fun video. It’s also important to stay hydrated and eat regular meals and snacks to maintain energy and focus.
