The incumbent will be responsible for providing psychological counseling services to students/young adults to support academic success and emotional well-being. This will include psychotherapeutic services as well as the development and identification of preventive and self-help programs with the goal of promoting well-being and improving student/young adult academic achievement. The holder will have to comply with the requirements of the HPCSA in this regard.


The successful candidate will be actively involved in the following areas:

  • Psychotherapeutic counseling services for students/young adults, to support academic achievement and emotional well-being:
    • Provide counseling services (individual and group work) and present programs to improve the emotional well-being of students;
    • Provide therapeutic services to children, adolescents and other client profiles on other campuses and sites, within the framework of training requirements;
    • Consultation with the leader: Advice to students and colleagues;

  • Development of preventive and mutual aid, academic and therapeutic programs according to the identified needs of students:
    • Develop new programs according to identified needs;
    • Cooperate and receive feedback from internal stakeholders through applicable data and research;

  • Career assessment and academic support services and programs:
    • Develop and provide academic support services and programs;
    • Provide feedback to students and parents after testing/advice;
    • Consult with academic staff, relevant internal and external stakeholders and students to determine needs, issues and opportunities for programs and other relevant interventions;

  • To research:
    • Contribute to research to help the department develop bespoke programs in line with the academic and emotional needs of the University of Pretoria student body;

  • professional development;
    • Improve personal level of knowledge by studying applicable literature and research to ensure continuous learning and training;
    • Participate in the presentation of cases for evaluation by supervisors and/or other professionals;
    • Undergo mandatory weekly supervision;

  • Participation in institutional activities:
    • Participate as a team member within the Student Guidance Unit in all its activities and networks within the University.


  • Proven enrollment as a Masters student in Counseling Psychology at an accredited university/college;
  • Registration as a student/trainee with the HPCSA;
  • Compliance in the above with HPCSA regulations;
  • Courses completed as part of the first year training in MA/MSc counseling psychology;
  • Successful practical work as part of the first year training in MA/MSc orientation psychology.


  • Knowledge of the following:
    • Psychological interventions at a professional level;
    • Short-term and brief therapy techniques;
    • A range of psychometric assessments;
    • The Code of Ethics and Conduct for Psychologists (HPCSA);

  • Ability to diagnose psychological problems and psychopathology within the practice of counseling psychologists;
  • Flexibility according to service requests;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team;
  • Effective planning, organizing and prioritizing skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage crisis interventions;
  • Professionalism, confidentiality and sensitivity towards student diversity;
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Computer skills in MS Word, PowerPoint and email;
  • Ethical insight and reliability.


  • Practical experience in a clinical setting;
  • Experience with psychological assessments and psychometric testing;
  • Experience in writing reports;
  • Registration with the Professional Council of Psychology of the HPCSA as a trainee Psychologist, before or simultaneously with taking up the position.

The total compensation package for this position is R96,000 per annum as determined by UP policy guidelines.
