Katie Treadwell named assistant vice-president for student affairs

LAWRENCE — Katie Treadwell has worked at the University of Kansas for nine years and has helped many students through difficult situations. Now, Treadwell has moved into a bigger role as Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs with a focus on student life endeavors. She took over the post on December 27.

“Katie is a great addition to our student affairs leadership team,” said Tammara Durham, Vice Provost Student Affairs. “She is an expert in crisis management and has extensive experience as an advocate for our students, which makes her uniquely qualified for this role.”

In her new role, Treadwell is a senior member of the student affairs leadership team and provides overall direction and direction to the Sexual Assault Education and Prevention Center, Sorority and Fraternity Life, Student Conduct and Community Standards, and the Center for Student Engagement and Leadership.

Additionally, Treadwell coordinates the efforts of the KU Parent Association and campus engagement protocol.

Treadwell has worked with countless KU students to maintain the university’s community standards. His expertise in crisis management is evident in his doctoral research, which focuses on learning from tragedy and studying how universities respond to worst-case scenarios. It includes in-depth investigations of intentional violence, terrorism, natural disasters and accidents that forever change a community. His work has appeared in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Encyclopedia of Strategic Leadership and Management, Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice, About Campus, and other higher education publications.

“It’s incredibly hard work,” Treadwell said. “It also highlights the deep resilience people bring to their work every day.”

Treadwell co-authored the book “Crisis, Compassion and Resiliency in Student Affairs” with Marijo Russell O’Grady.

Treadwell came to KU in 2013 as an Associate Principal for freshman experience before becoming Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards in 2019. Treadwell will temporarily remain as Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards (SCCS) until a nationwide search for the new director is completed in the spring.

“When I came to KU nine years ago, I never dreamed that I would fall in love with the KU community the way I did,” Treadwell said. “I have built incredible professional and personal relationships.”

Treadwell has over 15 years of experience in higher education administration, including significant roles in crisis response, residential living, sexual assault prevention, suicide prevention and health awareness mental. His efforts in student conduct and community standards have provided him with opportunities to engage with students who have taken part in non-academic misconduct or who have been harmed by someone in the KU community.

This kind of intimate work is not something Treadwell takes lightly, noting that it’s an honor to be with someone who is “navigating an incredibly difficult experience.”

“I approach these encounters with compassionate leadership, focusing on the people involved before the details of the situation, and the ability to help them develop a path forward,” Treadwell said. “I will bring these same skills to my work as Deputy Vice-Rector. My goal is to ensure that staff have the resources and support they need to create vibrant programs for our students and to work across the university to reduce barriers to student learning and engagement. students in the KU experience.

Treadwell received her Bachelor of Arts and Masters from Baylor University and her Doctor of Education from Teacher College, Columbia University.
